Collagen: A Quiet Ally for Fertility and Menopause Health

Collagen: A Quiet Ally for Fertility and Menopause Health

When we think about fertility or navigating the transitions of perimenopause and menopause, collagen might not be the first nutrient that springs to mind. But this humble structural protein is far more than a beauty supplement, it’s an unsung hero for hormonal health, reproductive wellness, and graceful ageing.

As a fertility and women's health acupuncturist, I’m always looking for ways to bridge traditional wisdom with the best of modern science. Collagen sits beautifully in that space: it supports the body’s natural rhythms, tissues, and healing processes in ways that can make a genuine difference for women at every stage of life.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, forming the scaffolding for skin, muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments. It’s also a key component of connective tissue in the reproductive system, the gut lining, and even the blood vessels that carry nutrients to our ovaries and womb.

Our bodies naturally produce collagen, but production peaks in our twenties and starts to decline in our thirties, and even more rapidly in perimenopause and menopause when oestrogen levels drop.

Collagen & Fertile Health

  1. Supports Ovarian and Uterine Tissues
Collagen helps maintain the strength and flexibility of reproductive tissues. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we might say it “nourishes the Jing” (our deep reserves) and supports the smooth flow of Blood and Qi to the womb. From a biomedical view, healthier connective tissue can support optimal uterine lining and ovarian function.

  2. Improves Egg Health via Blood Flow
Collagen supports the elasticity of blood vessels, aiding circulation. Better blood flow means better nutrient and oxygen delivery to the ovaries, which is essential for egg development.

  3. Helps Balance Inflammation
Chronic, low-grade inflammation can interfere with conception. Collagen peptides have been shown to support gut health (a cornerstone of immune balance), and a healthy gut can help regulate inflammatory responses throughout the body, including the reproductive system.

  4. Supports Healthy Cervical Mucus
Good hydration and connective tissue health can positively influence the quality of cervical mucus, which plays a crucial role in helping sperm reach the egg.

Collagen in Perimenopause & Menopause

As oestrogen declines, the body experiences more rapid collagen loss: up to 30% in the first five years after menopause. This isn’t just about skin elasticity; it impacts joints, bones, pelvic floor health, and even bladder function.

  • Bone Density: Collagen forms the flexible framework that minerals attach to, making it essential for strong bones. Supplementing collagen can help slow bone loss during menopause.

  • Joint Comfort: Collagen supports cartilage, helping to ease stiffness and maintain mobility which is very important for staying active and pain-free.

  • Pelvic Floor Support: Strong, resilient connective tissue is vital for bladder control and pelvic organ support.

  • Skin & Vaginal Tissue Health: Collagen helps maintain the elasticity and hydration of skin and mucous membranes, which can improve comfort and confidence.

Choosing & Using Collagen

Look for hydrolysed collagen peptides—these are broken down for better absorption. Marine collagen is often preferred for skin and connective tissue, while bovine collagen provides a broader range of collagen types for joints, bones, and reproductive tissue support.

You can also boost collagen naturally through:

  • Bone broth (a time-honoured TCM and culinary remedy)

  • Vitamin C-rich foods (helps your body build collagen)

  • Adequate protein from varied sources

  • Reducing sugar and processed foods, which can damage collagen fibres

The Acupuncture Connection

In TCM, we see collagen-rich foods and supplements as deeply nourishing to Yin and Blood—both vital for fertility and for easing the heat, dryness, and restlessness that can accompany perimenopause. Acupuncture can complement collagen support by improving circulation, regulating hormones, and calming the nervous system, helping your body use these building blocks more effectively.

Gentle Reminder: Collagen isn’t a magic wand, but rather a supportive tool which is most effective when combined with balanced nutrition, stress management, and, if needed, targeted acupuncture treatment. By caring for the connective tissues that literally hold us together, we give ourselves a stronger foundation for fertility, hormone balance, and vibrant health through every life stage.
