Cosmetic acupuncture: how to support treatment with an anti-aging skin care plan
It’s Summer, and the time of year when cosmetic acupuncture treatment is very popular. It’s a fantastic treatment that gives the skin a lovely natural glow and works on a number of levels to improve the skin’s appearance: increasing circulation to the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production by creating a tiny injury to the skin, and improving muscle tone.
Summer is a great time of year to get started, as is any time of year really but there is an additional challenge at this time of year - the Sun! That which brings us joy and warmth, and enables us to enjoy the outdoors can also be a villain for the skin unless we are careful. There is a direct link with sun over-exposure and skin cancers, and also with ageing of the skin. Over time it has a profound effect on the collagen and elastin leading to sagging and wrinkling.
I read an interesting article recently on the American Academy of Dermatology website which listed 7 steps to create an anti-ageing skin care plan.
Number one was advice to protect the skin from the sun by wearing a hat, covering up, wearing sunglasses and wearing a high factor sunscreen on any exposed skin. I see so many parents doing this for their children but not for themselves! I feel very strongly about this and wonder when the time will come when more British adults will be sensible in the sun and be less determined for a tan at any cost.
The second piece of advice is to avoid indoor tanning. It surprises me that this is still so popular now we are clear on the dangers: it really does the skin no favours in the long run.
The remaining advice was to use moisturiser to trap water in the skin, wash with a mild cleanser twice daily, stop smoking (immensely beneficial on so many levels), eat a healthy diet and get adequate sleep.
These are all simple but important things that I discuss during cosmetic acupuncture treatments to maximise the benefits of the sessions...above all though, please remember the sunscreen and be safe in the sun.
