Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy - don’t suffer in silence

Women suffering from nausea and vomiting and hyperemesis gravidarum face a very challenging time in early pregnancy. The more severe the condition, the more it impacts on their general quality of life and mental health and the effects can be far-reaching. There can be a lack of understanding for their condition from those around them, and it can be difficult to deal with the effects of persistent nausea like taking time off work, being unable to eat healthily, and there can be a real feeling of sadness at not experiencing what is perceived to be a “normal, happy, healthy pregnancy”.

In my experience of treating women with nausea and vomiting in pregnancy with acupuncture, there are ways of managing the symptoms which can make a big difference to quality of life. It’s really important that those who suffer from this condition are given the right information and support and are made aware of the therapeutic and alternative therapies available to help them cope. The medical profession can advise on the options for antiemetics that are safe during pregnancy, and acupuncture and acupressure are both safe to use and can often make a notable difference.

I’ve had two cases recently of women really suffering with this and with the right combination of medical and alternative treatments have come on leaps and bounds. It’s such a privilege to do this work and see such patients with smiles back on their faces and their heads held high again after feeling so low!
